DURRES, January 23,2014 — Albanian Harbor Police forces in cooperation with anti-drugs section in Durres announced Thursday they have seized last night nearly 450 kilos of cannabis sativa, hidden on a Macedonian trailer.
Official sources from the regional police department reported that the narcotic substance was found hidden in the trailer driven by a Macedonian citizen. The vehicle loaded with sacks of ferrosilicon was checked by specialized services at the ferry terminal in Durres while departing for Italian Bari port by ferry. Over 5.5 tons of narcotics were seized during 2013 in Durres, the biggest port of Albania.
Albania is considered a major transit zone for drugs and the leading supplier of cannabis for European markets, notably Italy and Greece.
